Now that the holidays are here, we are going to run into some ugly days for your Journey to Health. Some days you're going to really blow it with your diet. Or you may eat "kind of good", which means you threw some green beans on your plate of gravy, ham, and peach cobbler. Also, you may suffer through some awful workouts because of your hectic schedule, bloated belly, or complete lack of motivation. It's likely that you won't even exercise over the holidays. But here's some good news...IT'S OHHHH KAYYYY. Everything is going to be just fine. Some days aren't pretty, no matter the time of the year. And it's in those not so pretty days that real change is made. Let's dive in!!
You Don't Look Pretty
Some days you're going to look awful. Whether at the gym or park you're looking like straight up death. Maybe you just rolled out of bed, or you are beyond bloated from yesterday's family dinner. But either way, this ain't the day for your patented workout selfie. On these days your only objective is to get in, get out, and get done without anyone noticing you. And remember, exercise is tough at times. It's not supposed to be pretty. Whoever told you it is, was wrong. So get your ugly self out there and start sweating. Just kidding, I love you, and you're pretty/handsome/sexy!
Your Workout Itself Is Ugly
Not every day is PR (personal record) Day, and that's for a reason. Your body can be just as confusing as anything else in your life. For lots of different reasons you may not have your best on some days. A bad night's sleep 2 days ago is just now catching up to you, you haven't fully recovered from the run 3 nights ago, or you ate too many Cheetos the night before. So many little things go into your performance that it's more likely than not that some days are going to be ugly. On those days, you just get it done. Get in there and get whatever it is you planned out of the way. Especially on these days, ego will have to take a backseat. Because you may have to lower the weight or pace just to get through. Not every exercise of every workout is Instagram worthy, and it's OKAY!
Your Diet Isn't Very Pretty
All this talk of 100% or 80% or whatever percent clean eating can really drive you nuts. The fact of the matter is that some days aren't pretty when it comes to your diet. Anyone who says they eat 100% clean is either miserable, delusional, or lying. Trust me, I've been all three at once. Some days you're going to have a killer healthy breakfast, a rock star worthy lunch, and dinner like a 5 year old with a bag of Halloween candy! But hey, remember that breakfast and lunch? Yeah, those were sweet! Let's do more of that. Now that's reality. You're not going to get it right all the time or even most of the time, but at least you have a few things you can hang your hat on. Especially around the holidays, you can count on blowing it at one meal almost every day. But that doesn't mean it's all over. Try to start your day off right or finish strong or even snack like a vegan or something like that!! Some days/weeks/months your diet just isn't very pretty. That's a reality you need to live with and love about yourself.
There's Just No Positives At the End of the Day
Ever been here? You look and look and look back on your not so pretty day, and you just can't seem to find anything to highlight. This also will, can, and probably has happened to you along your Journey to Health. You need to know that this is OKAY. All is not lost. You are in this thing for the long haul and one day/week/month isn't going to ruin it all. At some point you will turn the tide. You will begin to win more than you lose, but when there are no positives to point out, it's really hard to think that way. The solution you ask? Hmm...actually, I don't know the solution. But I do know the fact that you're trying to find one is a positive thing. So there, problem solved. I know, not really, but you get what I'm going for. Thinking about making a change is a step in the right direction, and the fact that you're here means you're thinking.
Remember, some days aren't pretty, and that's OKAY.
