Don't Be Afraid of the Weight Room

I get it.  The weight room can be a terrifying place:  big guys, heavy weights, grunting, sweating, and everything in between.  But I’m here to tell you not to be scared.  Lots of great things can happen in the weight room with some education and some experience.  I’m going to hit on each of your biggest weight room fears, then offer some simple advice.

The Big People Scare Me

Well, they scare me too.  So know that you’re not the only one.  The next thing to remember is that no one is going to hurt you.  They may be jacked up on red bull and grunting their heads off, but no one is there to hurt you.  This isn’t fight club.  This is your local recreational weight room.

I Don’t Know What I’m Doing

This is a legitimate concern.  Without some weight room education, you could pick up a too heavy, weight and do a too complex exercise, and possibly injure yourself.  But remember that if you’re true beginner, you probably can’t pick up enough weight heavy enough to do much damage anyways.  One solution is to actually take advantage of the gym staff you’ve probably been ignoring, or better yet, grab a friend and you both take a tour.

You Feel Like You’re Being Watched.

This lesson goes back to your childhood when your Momma probably told you not to worry about what others think.  Here’s a small addition though.  Everyone in that weight room is there to improve him or herself no matter how fit or unfit.  You’re in this boat together.  Think of everyone in that room as a team, and teams do their best to work together and encourage each other toward a common goal.

Gym Germs

Oh I hate this one too.  Weight rooms are downright icky places.  Sweat and unwashed hands are everywhere.  The best way to combat this is to wash your hands before you go, wash after you leave, and clean off equipment before you use it.  And keep those hands out of your mouth my nail-biting brethren.

Just Get In There

Maybe this has solved a few of your fears.  Remember there are a lot of people who’d love to help you.  There’s plenty of free advice online, professionals, and even those fit friends can introduce you to a weight room and help you reap the benefits that you’ve been missing.
